What is SST?

Single session therapy (SST) is a one-off therapeutic approach where a client receives focused support from a therapist for a single, one-time contact, with the option to return later if needed. Unlike traditional, longer-term therapy, SST is designed to meet you in the here and now to work collaboratively to process or find solutions to a specific problem. This approach empowers you to implement the insights gained during the session before deciding if you want to look deeper at presenting issues with longer term therapy.

On the surface, single session therapy looks the same as regular therapy. We’ll have a short consultation to check that single session therapy is right for the incident or event that you are looking at processing. If it is, we’ll schedule a session. Single session therapy sessions are longer than regular weekly sessions and range from 90-120 minutes depending on your preference. In my experience, I have found that people with ADHD and AuDHD can benefit from more verbal processing time.

Location, time and costs?

Sessions are online and are paid for at the time of booking via Acuity. The length of the session is up to you, it can be 80 minutes for £100 or 110 minutes for £150. I hold sessions Tuesday - Friday between 9am and 8pm.

When is SST the right choice?

  • Resolving a specific problem: Getting through a breakup, managing a recent disagreement, or making a joint decision about an upcoming change.

  • Making difficult decisions: Talking through a tough choice with an impartial professional.

  • Personal development: Beginning to develop self-awareness, or navigate a new boundary with an existing relationship.

  • Information and exploration: Learning more about the counseling process without commitment, or exploring if more regular therapy is needed.

SST is for a single event or incident such as a child moving away from home or the overwhelm of a wedding or planning christmas. SST is not critical incident de-briefing and should not be used for traumatic events such as acts of terrorism, sexual assault or being a victim of a crime.

If you’re not sure if therapy is right for you or which one to type of session to choose, please feel free to email me at hello@amylasen.com or fill out the form at the bottom of the page and I’ll be in touch.

What if I attend SST and decide I need more sessions?

Clients who attend SST and decide that they want to attend more session can move to weekly sessions with myself. You won’t need another consultation and you can move to weekly sessions after your SST session. Weekly sessions are scheduled differently and are 50-minutes for £60 or 80-minute sessions for £90

When is SST not the right choice?

  • Severe Mental Health Issues: Complex conditions like chronic anxiety, severe depression, or unresolved trauma often require a prolonged and ongoing therapeutic process that a single session cannot provide.

  • Neurodivergence: To navigate through a new diagnosis or understanding of ADHD, AuDHD or ASD.

  • Overwhelming and Recurring Problems: If you have experienced highly overwhelming events or are struggling with persistent, recurrent negative thoughts and behaviors more time will be needed than one session offers.

  • Need for Ongoing Support: Individuals who require someone to help them manage complex, ongoing problems on a consistent basis are not good candidates for single session therapy.

  • Vague or Multiple Problems: If a client cannot identify a specific issue or has multi-faceted or deep rooted issues to bring to therapy, they are unlikely to benefit from the focused nature of a single session.

  • Preference for a Long-Term Relationship: Some clients need a consistent, ongoing relationship with their therapist, a dynamic that is not possible with single session therapy.

If your reason for coming to therapy relates more closely to the above points, you would likely benefit more from regular weekly sessions. Click here for more information
